Merdeka…!

Today, August 17th 2012, Indonesian people celebrates their independence day. Already the 67th year. Merdeka means freedom, the independence. Freedom from the previous colonization, freedom from oppression.  What’s next?!

Its already 67th year since the first time we declared the independence, seized our freedom. This freedom should be followed by the responsibility to build a better life. Merdeka means freedom to achieve the greatest dreams, freedom to obtain the highest education, freedom to live a more orderly environment. It’s about the certainty to get the best health care, better public transportation, more friendly social services, transparent and honest bureaucracy.

Merdeka means feeling safe. Safe from fear, safe from the threat. No need to be afraid to walk alone at night. No need to be afraid to pray, whatever your religion is. No need to be afraid to be different in thought, in expression. No need to feel threatened when you’re a gay, no need to feel left out when you are a disabled, no need to feel oppressed when you’re a non-moslem or indo-chinese guy.

Merdeka means the freedom to build a better life. God bless you, Indonesia!
